SOUTHBOUND FROM JUNCTION WITH DEVIL’S PATH TO JUNCTION WITH JIMMY DOLAN NOTCH TRAIL - 2.80 MILES TOTAL MILES COMPLETED - 20.65 MILES Completed this section of the Long Path while summiting my sixth Catskill 3500, Indian Head Mountain, whose actual summit doesn’t have any views. But there are incredible views from Sherman’s Lookout (elevation 3,200 feet), including the Berkshires of Massachusetts, as well as Vermont and the Hudson River. As its name implies, the Devil’s Path, which runs concurrently with the Long Path here, is filled with challenging scrambles and steep ascents and descents. A very warm and sunny day, with temperatures near 80. For details on the Indian Head climb, click Read More. NORTHBOUND FROM PLATTE CLOVE ROAD TO JUNCTION WITH HUCKLEBERRY POINT TRAIL - 1.05 MILES TOTAL MILES COMPLETED - 17.85 MILES This one-mile stretch of the Long Path was part of a hike I did to Huckleberry Point. Most of it is on a dirt road. Temps were in the low 70s with mostly sunny skies. NORTHBOUND FROM MT. IVY TO BIG HILL SHELTER - 6.00 MILES TOTAL MILES COMPLETED - 16.80 MILES This section starts near the busy Palisades Interstate Parkway and Route 202 in Mt. Ivy, New York and even follows alongside the Parkway for a bit. Eventually it turns into the woods and passes through Cheesecote Park and Harriman State Park. There are a couple of abandoned classic vehicles along the way as well as reservoirs and even an old cemetery. In order to get back before sundown, I gave up looking for the site of a 1974 plane crash where you can still find pieces of the wreckage. That will be for next time when I complete the remaining three-and-a-half miles of the section. Cloudy day with temperatures in the upper 20s. SOUTHBOUND FROM ROUTE 23 TO WINDHAM HIGH PEAK - 3.80 MILES TOTAL COMPLETED TO DATE - 10.80 MILES In this section of the Catskills, the Long Path follows the Escarpment Trail. I took this trail to ascend to Windham High Peak, the first of my Catskill 3500. More details can be found by clicking the Read More button. |
